Metastatic cancer occurs when cancer cells spread from the organ where they started to a distant part of the body. CT, MRI, and PET scans diagnose metastatic cancer.
Metastatic cancer is a more complex and aggressive form of cancer because metastases affect the functioning of already damaged organs and systems. Treatment of metastatic cancer usually requires a comprehensive approach, including surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and other methods depending on the type of cancer and the stage of the disease.
Essentially, what happens is once cancer reaches the vertebrae, it brings about a collapse in the spinal column that puts pressure on the nerve roots. Not only does this cause the chronic pain associated with metastatic cancer, but it also leads to a deforming of the spine.
