Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive treatment designed to stabilize fractures in the spine’s vertebrae, which often occur due to osteoporosis or cancer. These fractures can cause significant back pain and limit mobility. The procedure involves injecting medical-grade bone cement into the collapsed vertebra, restoring its strength and structure. At New York Pain Care, we tailor vertebroplasty treatments to provide swift pain relief and help patients regain function.

Once the cement is in place, it hardens quickly, forming an “internal cast” that stabilizes the vertebra. Afterward, the needle is removed, and imaging confirms the cement’s proper placement. This outpatient procedure is typically completed within an hour, allowing most patients to go home the same day.
While vertebroplasty is generally safe, it shares the risks common to medical procedures. Potential complications include leakage of cement into nearby tissues or blood vessels, which can cause nerve irritation or pain. There is also a small risk of infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to anesthetics.
Rarely, if the cement is improperly placed, it may irritate spinal nerves or the spinal cord itself, resulting in numbness or weakness. At New York Pain Care, we carefully assess every patient to minimize risks and maximize the safety and effectiveness of vertebroplasty.
