Reasons for Choosing the Intrathecal Pump

An intrathecal pump can be an option if you’ve tried traditional pain treatments, such as medications, injections, or physical therapy, without success. An intrathecal pump delivers medication directly to the spinal fluid, allowing for significantly lower doses with fewer side effects. At New York Pain Care, we recommend an intrathecal pump to patients who have severe chronic pain and spasticity or are suffering from pain that limits their quality of life and mobility.

Who Can Get an Intrathecal Pump

Not everyone is a candidate, but many chronic pain sufferers qualify after careful evaluation. Good candidates are patients who have been diagnosed with chronic pain and have already tried multiple conservative treatments without experiencing adequate relief. Our team works together to review your health history, any relevant imaging results, and your overall condition to determine if an intrathecal pump is a good fit.

    How the Intrathecal Pump Works

An intrathecal pump is a small implant that is inserted under the skin, commonly in the abdomen, and connected to a catheter that extends to the spinal canal. It delivers medication directly to the cerebrospinal fluid, acting on the targeted nerves with precision and reducing systemic exposure. Because the doses are far smaller than oral medications, side effects are reduced. The pump can be refilled periodically in an outpatient setting and doesn’t require any additional surgery.

    After Your Surgery

After your intrathecal pump is implanted, you may experience some soreness around the incision site and mild discomfort in nearby areas. This typically improves within a few days. Physical activity should be limited at first, so it’s best to avoid lifting heavy objects, bending, or twisting for several weeks. During this recovery period, your device will be tested and programmed to the dosage that works best for you. You’ll also have regular follow-up visits to make sure the pump is functioning properly, while gradually returning to your normal daily routine under our New York Pain Care team’s guidance.
